Kar Kar Island is a traquil hideaway, 60 miles north east of Madang offering relaxation for those who need to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is a volcanic island covered in cocoa and coconut plantations. The last eruption was in 1978. The island people still live a simple life from subsistence farming with the main cash crop being cocoa and coconuts.
Although not a dive resort, it is surrounded by exceptional diving and fishing grounds and is used as an extension to those established dive sites in the Madang waters. Diving can be organised through Jais Aben Resort and the other Madang based operations.
Kar Kar Hideaway is a small intimate resort situated within a working cocoa and coconut plantation and is the only modern accommodation available on the island. The Hideaway consists of two waterfront bungalows with an emphasis on a traditional feel.
Both are located fifteen feet from a private beach with large verandahs overlooking the ocean. A larger bungalow, suited to families, can sleep up to six people and has a living room and fully equipped kitchen. The other bungalow sleeps up to three. Meals can be provided and are served at the main plantation house.
Kar Kar Island boasts some of the finest diving in the Bismarck Sea and is suited to the more experienced diver. Diving is primarily wall diving consisting of vast array of large pelagic fish including dog tooth tuna, barracuda, mackerel and various sharks.
For the non diver, walks to the volcanic crater can be organised. This is full day for experienced walkers. Other easier coastal walks, coach tours and picnics can be arranged.
Islands Airways, Madang, telephone 852 2601, fly to Kar Kar Monday to Friday and Saturday morning. The Hideaway is located 20 miles from the airstrip. For the more adventurous traveller, cargo boats operate from Agmark Wharf, Madang.

Conveniently located at Smugglers Inn Resort, Madang aquaventures caters for every level of diver, from beginner to instructor and anything in between. They also offer a variety of land tours and options.
Quietly dive in the Madang Lagoon over the wrecks of an intact B25 Mitchell Bomber in 18 metres or drift along Barracuda Point and be surrounded by swirling trevally or barracuda. Manta Rays, hammerheads and eagle rays are all regular visitors to this reef wall.
Take a three to five-day aboard the 10-metre dive boat to Hansa Bay. There are seven known wrecks, including the "Shushi Maru" which lies in 20 metres and still has ammunition, trucks and saki bottles in the holds. Not to mention the diversity of marine life which now call the wreck home.
When currents and big fish beckon, a three-day trip to Bagabag, 35Nm from Madang would excite the most experienced diver. It can be difficult sometimes to decide after a dive at Bagabag which one of the many sharks, dogtooth tuna or Spanish mackerel was the biggest and which one came the closest. This is experienced diver country with regular strong currents and lots of action.
