Description: Traditional thatched houses in Papa Village, Central Province (Approx 1976) Papa is a Koita village situated on the coast between Porebada and Lea Lea which are both Motuan Villages. A river seperates Lea Lea from Papa which in itself is approx 30-40 drive west on coast road from Port Moresby. Papa used to derive income from Barramundi fishing and attempt was made to establish a fish canning industry. Villagers also were employed to work at the cattle station which was situated on the Lea Lea and Papa road approx 4 kms from Papa. More recently I believe salt mining by Japanese concerns has been established. Unfortunately these taditional Papuan houses on the coast at Papa are no longer standing. I enjoyed visiting and staying in these houses which were a lot cooler than the current tin and timber homes. Especially when there was no electricity connected. As the houses in Papa are built on the land rather than over the ocean mosquitoes were and still remain an ever present problem from dusk to dawn especially near the mangrove swamps. You get used to them.
