The SPMSC is much reduced in area from what it was in 1970-72. Back then there was a (think it was called) Three Quarter Circuit which was a race for motorcycles on a flat plane with a main straight and other curves to complete the circuit. Charley Yabsley bought an AJS with gear change on the right hand side of the bike. Coming into the home straight, and in a winning position, he pressed down hard with the wrong foot, thinking he was changing gear. Of course it was the rear brake he was activating. The bike went out of control, flipped around, he was thrown off. He lost that race with only 20 yards to go. There was the scrambles track too. It went clockwise, veering very close to Waigani Rd before turning away and coming back eventually to the start line which was just out in front of the clubhouse. Kel Neilsen on a Bultaco was one prominent rider amongst others.
