I was born in Goroka 49 years ago, and returned to Australia with my parents when I was only a few months old. I have never returned to my place of birth, although I have yearned to see the Eastern Highland region that my parents have spoken of so often. My mother, who is now in her late 70s, has recently expressed a wish for the two of us to take a trip together to Goroka, to celebrate my fiftieth year. We would be travelling from Brisbane to Port Moresby, then on to Goroka, where we hope to spend four or five days, before returning to Australia.
Although my mother is in good health, she is quite elderly, and would like to feel secure and comfortable. Can someone suggest the best place for us to stay in Goroka? I have located information about a Highlands Culture tour run by Ecotourism Melanesia which sounds interesting. They recommend staying at the Pacific Lodge. I also know that Goroka PNG Highland Tours can organise a customised four-five day itinerary. I really need some advice as to what would work best for us.
One thing that we would like to do is to locate the area that was once our coffee farm (Bena-Bena) on a plateau overlooking Goroka township. My mother loved her years in the New Guinea Highlands, and wants to see it once more before she dies.
