Sepik celebrate annual festival despite heavy rainfall
The two days Garamut na Mambu festival in Wewak last week was only a one-day event because of rain and funeral service of Mother of East Sepik, Laura Martin.
According to the Festival Chairman, Anton Sakarai, the festival was successful despite the fact of vanilla boom in the province.
He said there were only six singsing groups in the province participated because other traditional dancing groups from two provinces, Morobe and Madang did not make it due to financial difficulty.
He said member for Wewak, Kimson Kare officially opened the festival on Friday and the mask from East Sepik performed during the opening.
Mr Sakarai said outcome of the festival was successful as a result they would submit their recommendation to National Cultural Commission to host the festival in August because many tourist from Japan enters Wewak in August.
He said most of the tourist from the Agriculture University in Japan who took time to travel to Maprik to study yam-planting ceremony.
He said next year’s festival would be more organized and need more publicity and sponsors.
He said everybody including the inmates of Boram jail contributed with man power.
He said the inmates involved in building shelters and preparing the stage.
