Drum Drum tours PNG
Bringing coal to Newcastle?
extract from Darwin music magazine "After 7 years Darwin-based Drum Drum is finally returning to its roots with a tour of PNG. Taking its name from the English translation for the Gaba Gaba village on the southeast coast of the country, the band features dancers and classically trained musicians from PNG, Fiji and Australia. Drum Drum’s music ranges from the hypnotic and invigorating rhythms of the log drums to the funky dance fusion, combining traditional music with influences of funk, ska and soul. The band will leave Darwin on July 14 to help launch the first PNG Arts Council, based in Port Moresby. Its eight members will be involved in panels, discussion and workshops at local schools, as well as a performance featuring the legendary Tambaran Culture, Telek and many more. The highlight of the tour will be a performance by the group in Gaba Gaba, where four of the band’s members are from. It will be the first time that Drum Drum has performed their full show in the village and it will be the culmination of seven years work since their last visit. Band member Mark Smith said ”I think it will be great. It’s a rare opportunity to go back to PNG and meet up with the musicians who originally inspired us”. Drum Drum will also record material for its next album during the PNG tour. On returning home on July 20 the band will then start preparing for its second tour of the United States in August this year." |

i had the pleasure of watching Drum Drum perform last month when they came here to New York. They were really good and we got to meet them after the show which was nice. It was good to see other Papua New Guineans here in New York and what was also cool was that there were soo many Americans there who appreciated and liked the concert a lot.
Drum Drum is a great asset to our country and culture!! |
