Japanese Ki-45 Nick
On New Guinea's northern coast lies the wreck of a Japanese Army Ki-45 Nick twin-engined fighter.
The aircraft flew into the side of a 45 degree hill, where it lies shattered but almost completely intact. The aircraft is exceedingly rare, and attempts are being made at present to discover its history. Our regular contributor Michael Claringbould is working closely with his Kiwi friend in New Guinea, John Douglas of Port Moresby, on this identification (and others). Photograph taken in February 2000 |
