A Haven for Backpackers !

MALUM NALU says the Magila Motel in Port Moresby offers cheap accommodation for young people on shoestring budgets.

BACKPACKERS’ lodges are common in Australia and other parts of the world. As the name suggests, they’re for backpackers — tourists and travellers — who roam the globe with their backpacks on their shoulders.
They are mainly frequented by what the industry classifies as free independent travellers — mainly young people — who travel the world on a shoestring budget.

Backpackers make up a large proportion of tourists all over the world, and they have gained wide recognition. Budget accommodation developed with them in mind can be found at all major tourist destinations.

In PNG, accommodation is sometimes unnecessarily expensive, and this can be a major deterrent for backpackers.

It goes without saying that should backpacker lodges or budget-priced guesthouses for that matter be established all over this diverse country of ours, we could be tapping into a gold mine.

And it has to be said that those already established backpacker lodges, are not necessarily as cheap as their name implies, and few if any can realistically fall into this category.

Well, not until now!

The newly renovated Magila Motel complex is conveniently located at Magila Road in Six Mile, Port Moresby.

It is only four kilometres from the international and domestic airports, and has easy access to downtown Port Moresby, Boroko, and Waigani business districts.

Magila Backpackers offers 22 rooms with shared facilities including cable television, showers, and communal kitchen, a dining area and a laundry.
It provides excellent alternative and cheaper accommodation in Port Moresby.

The complex also embraces a motel and a women’s hostel, and is situated in spacious grounds, where you can enjoy the relaxed and informal environment.

It caters to all budgets and offers great value for money.
Facilities include ample secure parking, courtesy transfers to and from airport, back-up power and water, secretarial services, laundry service, bistro, barbeque facilities, and 24-hour security.

Trained and friendly staff offer a high level of service, and they do their best to make your stay an enjoyable and comfortable experience.
An enterprising couple, Eileen and Bryan Tan, was driving along Six Mile last year when they noticed the property for sale.

It used to be the former Air Niugini apprentice quarters and was left in a “terrible mess”.

“We just drove past and we noticed a sign for tenders,” Mr Tan recalls.
“We contacted the real estate agents, and then negotiated with Air Niugini. That’s when the Air Niugini board came in and accepted our offer.

“The original idea was to concentrate on the women’s hostel.”
Business, however, was so good that the Tans decided to cater for backpackers, as well as others looking for budget accommodation in Port Moresby.

“We bought it in July last year when the Air Niugini board decided to sell,” Mr Tan continues.

“We opened in November last year.

“By the time we had opened, we had spent K1 million. We have since spent another K1 million, so overall, we have spent more than K2 million on this place. We believe we have the most competitive rates in terms of price as a ratio of accommodation, that’s why our rooms are always full.”

Apart from the backpackers’ facilities, the Motel offers 16 spacious, quiet, clean, and comfortable rooms at affordable prices.
The Women’s Hostel offers 22 rooms with shared facilities including cable television, showers, and communal kitchen, dining and laundry.
The hostel is designed for single women who seek affordable accommodation in Port Moresby.

Magila has already taken in tourists from Australia, the UK, Israel and US.
