On dog patrol - dealing with the packs of "wild" dogs rampaging Rabaul. Previously family pets, these days turned feral, diseased and dangerous.

The frangipani flower is a symbol of the beauty of Rabaul. When you visit Rabaul you will mostly see alot of different colors of frangipani .It is the common flower that grows in the volcanic soil of Rabaul East New Britain. It was the first flower to bloom out after the previous eruption in 1994 and 1937.

Talking from Experience

Just having to be there and experience one of the greatest natural disasters in Papua New Guinea's history was amazing. I will never forget that day as long as I Live. I know for a fact the photo's when viewed always bring a tear to the eye, knowing the most Beautiful town in PNG was destroyed by volcanic ash. A town which was once filled with joyous life, laughter, joy and most of all peace. Missing the nights women and children could walk the streets at late hours without having to worry about rascals, rapists or trouble makers. Living in a town where you didn't have to sleep with one eye open every half an hour to check for vandals, not even worried about them climbing the fences cause there wern't any fences. Imagine the peace, the respect, the culture, the rich market produce at ubelieveable prices and the quality and variety of vegetable, fruits, artifacts, yearly cultural and sporting events that brought the famous Queen's Park Oval in the centre of Rabaul to Cheers & Beers. Picnic outings were a common weekend routine by each family or household, and the excitement always ended with a big bang at the various night clubs, that boasted Deejays, Live bands with very little or no trouble at all, Phew!!! I will never forget that town, our town, Rabaul Town.............

pass the tissues..

Jes don't know how to express to you what I'm feeling right now. It's only been the 2nd day for me on this here site BUT the second I discovered all these pics, I was already tearing up! Rabaul will always be home, it's jes everything 'bout the culture, those delicious fruits(ol mango t'sol), the sights, so many incredible things that make up Rabaul. Cruzing on bus #1 with your buddies, hiking up the mother mountain(Kambiu) jes to enjoy the view of the beautiful harbour, yeh - NO FENCES, school carnivals and other events at Queen's Park, you could actually drive thru to somewhere in Kopex from NCR..pass the bloomin' tissues, here I go again.
I jes wanna thank y'all for putting the pics here. OK, 'nuff said.
Boina tuna,
Pikinini Malex

Turvurvur eruption Oct 2002

I witnessed the recent eruption at Turvurvur in Oct/Sept 2002.

Does anyone know if the volcano is still erupting on and off?

Thanks.....Iain
