The new Kokopo road cuts through a barren landscape where once stood lush jungle, fertile gardens and the homes of many.

Talc - like ash fills the air as a truck load of building materials, with salvage team perched atop, makes it's way along Kokopo road.

And then come the rain........With arrival of the monsoon (November - May) heavy rains brought further destruction. Because the land lacked vegetation and it's normal absorption capacity, run offs quickly transformed ash into mudflows carving their way to the harbour.

Relics of the Japanese occupation of Rabaul during world War II (January 1942 - August 1945). Un-detonated bombs that were unearthed during the eruptions and left lying by the roadside, were later disposed of by the army.
