Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)

There is going to be an American remake of Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) by Syfy. Syfy has ordered a pilot based on a teleplay by Josh Bycel (Scrubs) and Jonathan Fener (American Dad).

http://www.sneakpeek.ca/2010/05/syfy...d-hopkirk.html

The original series ran for a single season between 1969 and 1970 and was created by former Doctor Who story editor Dennis Spooner and ITC producer Monty Berman.

There was a (British) remake which ran for two seasons between 2000 and 2001 and featuring Fourth Doctor actor Tom Baker as a new character Wyvern.

I personally have only seen the 2000-01 remake series but not the original.

My Late Lamented Friend and Partner:
Episode 1 of the original series.
Written by Danger Man creator Ralph Smart.
Surprise that this was not written by series creator Dennis Spooner himself but Smart does provide a very good starting point for the series.
Mike Pratt (Jeff Randall) and Kenneth Cope (Marty Hopkirk) are well cast in their parts and it is always lovely to see Annette Andre (Jeannie) in anything she is in.
Frank Windsor makes for a good villain who ordered the hit on Marty.

A Disturbing Case:
Episode 2.
Thinking that Jeff is going mad with him talking to Marty, a concerned Jeannie has him committed to a psychiatric hospital. Bizarrely one of the psychiatrist Dr Conrad (David Bauer) is a criminal mastermind and is in the midst of an operation whilst treating Jeff.
Another psychiatrist is Dr Lambert played by Gerald Flood (Kamelion in Doctor Who).
David Bauer’s voice has been used very distinctively as it served a very effective key plot point for the episode.
Very very fun.

A bit of an outrage is that at IMDb the series is listed under its US title My Partner The Ghost.

All Work and No Pay:
Episode 3.
Two conmen brothers who pretend to be spiritualists tried to get Jean in sending clients who wanted to contact their late loved ones.
The two brothers are quite kooky while Laura Watson (Adrienne Corri) although not a villain sure did not present herself as very likable.

Whoever Heard of a Ghost Dying?:
Episode 8.
Guest stars includes John Fraser, Alexandra Bastedo (from fellow Dennis Spooner series The Champions) and Charles Lloyd Pack (Roger's father).
Pretty good episode in which Marty gets deceived about the plans of a criminal gang due to one of them being a psychic played by Charles Lloyd Pack

Since that comment IMDb has sensibly reverted the show's listing back to its true title.

The House on Haunted Hill:
Episode 9.
Fun mix of a diamond theft with that of a haunted house.
Judith Arthy as Jean’s sister Jennifer makes for a good stand-in for Jean as Jean is on holiday during this episode.
In fact Judith Arthy is credited as a regular in this episode while the absent Annette Andre (Jean) is not. This is quite unusual as stand-in performers don’t usually get a regular credit in place of an absent regular.

Meanwhile I got an update on the US remake:
I read from a report dated in January that Jane Espenson and Drew Z. Greenberg will be writing the pilot. Both has previous supernatural experience as both had written for Buffy.
Jane Espenson is currently producing and writing Torchwood: Miracle Day.

The Ghost Who Saved The Bank at Monte Carlo:
Episode 11 of the original series.
Guest stars Nicholas Courtney and Roger Delgado, both of whom would later work together in Doctor Who.
Jeff and Jean accompanied Marty’s aunt to Monte Carlo and in a casino there the aunt always wins at the table. This attracts attention from three interested parties. Extremely funny how these parties get into each other’s way.
Also definitely worth a mention is guest star Veronica Carlson looking a knockout in a bikini.

For The Girl Who Has Everything:
Episode 12 of the original series.
The girl of the title was played by Lois Maxwell who says she has been haunted at her house.
A ghost hunter has hired Jeff to look into this case and things become more intriguing and sinister when the ghost hunter got murdered.

Somebody Just Walked Over My Grave:
Episode 17 of the series.
Guest star Geoffrey Hughes.
Very good mix in plot involving the kidnap of the son of a rich man and with them wearing 18th century apparel at the cemetery where Marty was buried which is why Jeff got involved in this case as Marty was off somewhere else for much of this else due to his disinterest in this case.
Quite fun seeing the kidnappers’ plan collapsing due to a unforeseen circumstance.

Could You Recognise the Man Again?:
Episode 18 of the original series.
Jeff and Jean witnessed a gangster killing a rival.
Jeff and Jean are intimidated by the gangster’s thugs in order to help their boss.
This is an enjoyable episode in seeing the course of justice being perverted and quite a surprise what a gangster does at the end as it became clear that he is very doomed.

Coincidentally just after watching this episode saw Annette Andre in fellow ITC show Return of the Saint in the episode Yesterday’s Hero.
