Accomodation in Lae

Hello! We are an expat family moving to Lae and have looked at accomodation at 9 or 10 mile. I understand there is some concern about driving through 2 and 3 mile and I will be driving into town through that area alot with kids or on my own during the day.
Just wondering if this would be OK or would we be better off looking at accomodation in the town centre.

Hi,
I have some friends that used to live in Lae (9 months ago). Inter Oil.

They lived at the 9mile compound. Company policy insisted that they have an escort driving out to the compound.

You will probably get a bigger place with heaps of play area out at 9 mile. In town you won't need the escort, but accomodation may not be as good.

My choice would be town, otherwise you should buy a big 4WD with a big bullbar & only use the accelerator pedal.

Have you had a "look see" at Lae, Job, Accomodation yet?

Thanks Tony for that! Yes we've just been up to Lae and had a look around at accomodation - at 9mile & in town. Much prefer 9 mile with the space etc... Like the idea about the escort driving out of the compound....
My husband is in shipping - still working through the contract so have not yet confirmed move to Lae.
Any other tips on living in Lae???

If you are not going to use air conditioing. Try and get some "cupboard heaters". These are usually common in NZ or Aus southern states.

Everything has the ability to grow mould/mildew.

Buy a boat if you can, then you can spend time out of Lae, Say at Salmua

Use your travel money, to see the country, not go back to Aus. Remember PNG is not Lae or Port Moresby.
