Port Moresby Medical Services

Port Moresby Medical Service Clinic & Hospital

If I have been asked once, I have been asked a hundred times, just where to find this surgery.

I feel it is better to go by landmarks here in PNG so I will explain it as follows:

The city of Port Moresby is considered to be at 1 mile and the airport is at 7 mile.

The easiest way to find the clinic is to head for the five mile roundabout. If you are coming from Port Moresby on the highway, you will need to go completely around the roundabout at Boroko Foodworld and take the entrance to Murray International School/United Church area and head for the roundabout.

Pass through the roundabout and continue up the road for approx. 2kms. Turn right just before you get to the Catholic Church.

If you end up at the Church you have gone to far.

After you turn right, follow this road until you come to the corner image.

If you are driving along the old highway, you will only have to remember the distance and turn towards East Boroko when you arrive at the 5 mile roundabout.

At the moment you cant miss the roundabout as construction on the road stopped some months back and it is a complete mess.

SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME (SARS) - Also known as "Deadly Penumonia" epidemic

SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME (SARS)

Dear Flight Attendants and Pilots (and Ground Staff)

Travel advisory has been issued by the World Health organisation with regards to an illness known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS. This illness has been reported in Taiwan, China (including Hong Kong),Singapore, Vietnam, and other South East Asian countries.

The symptoms of SARS are like influenza or pneumonia.
They include:
  • High fever more than 38 degrees C
  • One or more respiratory symtoms including cough, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing.

SARS should be suspected in a passenger or crew member if there has been:
  • Close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with SARS.
  • Recent history of travel to areas where cases of SARS have been reported.

What are we doing about SARS? We are taking this condition seriously. We are keeping in close contact will continue to update as we learn more about SARS.

In the meantime a number of procedures have been reviewed. Please be aware:
  • About ill passengers prior to boarding particularly meeting the criteria for this illness, or developing this illness in flight.
  • Pax Illness in flight (suspected SARS), Crew are to alert the destination airport if any passengers meeting the criteria of symptoms outlined above for SARS.
  • In the event of a passenger collapse, mouth to mouth resuscitation is not suitable. Wear gloves, use the oral airway, Ambubag and face mask from the Physician's Kit.
  • Crew Illness as you can see the symptoms of SARS are like many other respiratory infections such as the flu. If you do develop flu like symptoms, when seeking medical attention please advise the doctor if you have been to a destination within the last 14 days where SARS has been reported.

Overseas:
If you develop symptoms of a possible SARS infection overseas contact the Company Medical Officer.

Home:
If you suffer from any of the above illness symptoms within 14 days of returning home after travelling to these destinations please advise the doctor treating you.

The cause of SARS is not yet known. However, using good personal and infection control hygiene practices should reduce your chances in contacting SARS. These include:
  • Hand washing after all tasks and prior to eating food.
  • Use of gloves per set procedures eg when handling blood/body fluids, or collecting in phase of meal service, as you have been instructed.
  • Not sharing cups and drinking vessels.
Flu Vaccinations do not cause SARS. There is no vaccine to prevent this illness. If you develop SARS, the treatment is similar to that given to people with flu -rest, controlling fever and maintaining fluid intake.

For further advice please contact Dr A.Chelvanathan
