Melanesian traditional cultures and indigenous ways

Our Melanesian traditional cultures and indigenous practices are slowly dying out. Many of our people are very concerned about this and tried to keep them alive in one way or the other. Many still believe that there should be some very 'big' things done. Some of those people who think our cultures and indigenous ways must be properly promoted, preserved and protected have been seriously thinking about making a documentary of each culture in PNG.. Wow! This sounds a blunt idea as we have more than 840 different languages and our cultures are just the same number. These group of people think if we involve each person from each communities to write about their own culture, we may finally come up with some information that we can have in writing for preservation of our culture...

They went ahead and formed a group known as the The Melanesian Way Inc (tmwpng). This group is focused on getting our oral culture to at least be written down and be preserved for our children in the future and be promoted to non-melanesians as well.

TMW was registered with IPA in April 2007 and its first project was to work with the Bristish Museum in London under a project known as The Melanesian Arts Project to stand between the museum and the indinegous communities to identify some of the objects in the museum and draw correct description of each objects from indigenous people (if not done when it was first collected).

Well...they also thought it would be a good idea for any interested persons who wanted to write about some dying cultures in their own communities or others who are interested in some cultures may join them. For those who can be able to access internet may write on the Blog (www.tmwpng.wordpress.com). Some of the writings will be published in the Sunday Chronicle newspaper - PNG's new weekly English newspaper with circulation nationwide. They also welcome any better idea that go towards pomotion, protection and preservation of our cultures.

Until then we wait for your comment...

The Melanesian Way.
