PNG Orchids

PNG ORCHIDS TO GO GLOBAL

PORT MORESBY's revitalised Botanical Garden's hope to attract orchid fanciers from all over the world.

Local orchid grower Wolfgang Bandisch believes the sub-alpine tropical rainforest in PNG's highlands is perfect for orchid growing. He has already successfully propagated several thousand plants, both natural species and hybrids at his Sogeri nursery outside Port Moresby. Some years agao, Mr. Bandisch assisted landowners of Lake Kutubu to establish an orchid nursery. He agrees that orchid growing can be a viable business in PNG.

"Naturally occuring species flower only at certain times. But when crossbreeding or hybridising is done, the new hybrid becomes 'confused' and loses its natural flowering cycle, resulting in the plants producing flowers all year round," he said.

Mr. Bandisch said many orchid farms in the world produced and exported flowers only during a few months a year, and during the off-season customers had to look elsewhere for blooms.

Papua New guinea's sub-alpine tropical rainforest knows no winter season. Furthermore, the air and water, major ingredients in successful orchid farming, are clean, thus providing an excellent environment for orchids to flourish and produce healthy flowers:
