Baia Wilderness Lodge

BAIA SPORTFISHING LODGE

WEST NEW BRITAIN, PAPUA NEW GUINEA

INFORMATION FOR PNG BASED VISITORS.

TRAVEL TO BAIA LODGE:

Travelling to Baia Lodge is by road or sea depending on the weather and client preference. There is great scenery on the way and if traveling by boat there is a good chance of catching fish before we get to the Lodge.

There will be an overnight at Liamo Reef Resort on arrival and the night before departure date. If clients are arriving early that morning then it is possible to travel to Baia Lodge on the same day.

ACTIVITIES AT BAIA LODGE:

Sports fishing in both fresh and salt water is the main activity at the lodge. Fishing equipment is provided, however for a larger group we will need notice in order to prepare sufficient gear. All tackle and lures are on a replacement basis should it be damaged or lost. Recommended lures can be purchased at the lodge.

About six river systems are within the bay and all have Spot tailed and Black Bass. Mangrove Jacks, Jungle Perch, Tarpon, Travelly, and Fingermark are also species found within the freshwater estuaries. The Ocean and reefs provide great fishing action from pelagics such as Spanish mackerel, Yellowfin and Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Travelly, Wahoo and reef species like Coral trout, Emperor and Sweet lip.

The people of Baia Village are a friendly people and would be more than happy to show off some of their traditional dancing or a tour through their village. Excursions for Bush Walking and Bird Watching enthusiast can also be arranged with the village guides.

Pristine coral reefs surround the Bay for snorkeling and there are picturesque freshwater springs not far from the Lodge for those who simply want to unwind and enjoy a swim and a day’s picnic.

Equipment for Bass Fishing:

15 kg or 24kg line on a solid bait caster reel like the Abu 6500 and 7000. Shimano also have great reels such as the Calcutta and Catala 400 and their TE series. Braided or Mono line is a personal preference. Rods need to be strong but not too stiff as to make casting difficult. A 10 to 15 kg Ugly Stik of around 5.6 feet does the job. Great rods in the more up market range are made by Angler Rods in Brisbane.

They include models like the Spiraflex BTX5 10 to 15kg, Stealth, Ultragraph, and Braid Buster rods. Boats are custom built 6.7 meter vessels with center consul and 4 stroke engines. The vessels will comfortably accommodate 3 anglers and a guide. Request for exclusive use of boat and guide will attract an extra fee.

PACKAGE AND BOOKING POLICY :

Because of logistics and costs to visit Baia Lodge, the minimum persons required for each excursion at the Lodge is five. Less persons may do the trip but at a slightly higher price to meet the above quota. The duration required at the lodge will need to be a minimum of four nights to make your trip worthwhile and to enjoy what the area has to offer.

Bookings can be organized through Niugini Holidays in Cairns. Their email is spt@onthenet.com.au and phone: (07) 40392251. Please contact Niugini Holidays for booking policy details and package rates. Approximate costs per night at Liamo Reef Resort (Kimbe) is $A180 per person/night and the cost at Baia Lodge is approximately A$750 per person/night. VAT is not included.

Everything is part of the package from Transfers to the Lodge, Food, Laundry, Fishing Gear, and Boats. Beverages are the only extra costs at the Lodge and the cost of any damaged or lost Tackle.

Meals are both Western and Chinese style cuisine and of course fresh seafood is always part of the menu. Any special requests on types of drinks or wines need to be notified weeks before hand so that special arrangements can be made for your trip.

Rooms are large and very comfortable as twin share, however it is likely that each person may have their own room when possible. All rooms have ceiling fans and 240 outlets throughout the building. 12 volt alternative power is also connected if the Generator is off. Flushable toilets, hot water, and all the comforts of home make Baia Lodge a fantastic place to escape and experience a unique bit of paradise.

OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION:

Insurance: Baia Lodge is situated in an isolated area of the West New Britain coast, and in extreme emergencies the quickest way out is by Helicopter. Travel Insurance is strongly recommended as we will not be responsible for any financial or other disappointment caused by reasons beyond our control.

Protective clothing from the sun and sunscreen is essential. Insect repellant is also important in certain fishing areas. The area in and around the Lodge is fortunate enough not to have many mosquito’s or sand flies.

Photograph: Another successful trip for Baia Lodge and another 40 pounder Black Bass for the records caught by Lynette from Victoria. Lynette nearly landed an even bigger Black Bass but it escaped on its final run into a nearby snag......estimated weight 45 plus.
