1st Papua New Guinean to enter Spiritan Order

The Congregation of The Holy Spirit under the Protection of The Immaculate Heart of Mary (Spiritans) had their first Papua New Guinean being ordained deacon on Wednesday 9th October in Aitape.

Deacon Michael Terence Watae CSSp from Yakamul in the East Coast of Aitape was ordained deacon by the Bishop of Aitape, Austen Crapp OFM.

Deacon Michael joined the order of the Spiritans making him, the first Papua New Guinea to join this Order.

In the Diaconate ordination mass celebrated in his home parish, St Raphael, Nabuse parish at Yakamul, Deacon Michael was dressed in his traditional attire in the Tambaran Haus.
He was escorted in a procession by a young married couple, school children, village elders and other church leaders depicting his life and was given over to the Parish Priests- Fr Leonard Takaram and Fr Mathew Minda.

The theme of the procession was to strengthen family life, God's call to each individual, working together with other churches and to show everyone that Christ himself started the Priesthood Profession.

Bishop of Aitape Diocese, Austen Crapp OFM said that, to have a priest in a parish and the Diocese is a very big thing.

He added: "Deacon has made a big promise to be of service and it is not easy. There will be a lot of temptations. He has gone through a long journey to come this far."

"We are all in God's hands in good times and bad times, the family, priest and the Diocese as a whole must help Deacon Michael," said Bishop Austen.

"Deacon Michael is also the first man in PNG to join the Spiritans and we all should be proud of him," he added.

Deacon Michael was then brought by his family, who took his traditional dressing off as a sign that they were giving him to God.
"We the Spiritans are very happy to have our first PNG deacon," said The Head of the Spiritan Order in Papua New Guinea, Fr Chinua Okeke CSSp.

Fr Chinua added that in their assessment, if they saw that Deacon Michael had followed the teachings and work of the Spiritans well and are satisfied with it, Deacon Watae's priesthood ordination will be held on the 2nd February 2003.

He also reminded the crowds of people who were gathered at the ordination that it was our duty to think of him and pray for him to strengthen him, to do his work.

He also added that this year was the Jubilee year for the Spiritans and was happy that in their celebrations, they also celebrate the diaconite of Michael Watae.

A week earlier on the Wednesday 2 October Deacon Michael made his final at the Spiritan House in Aitape.

The Spiritans first came to PNG in 1971 to Kerema and Mt Hagen. Between 1980 and 1981, they came to Aitape. This year was their Jubilee Year celebrating 300 years since their formation 27th May 1703.
