PO Box 90,
BULOLO. Morobe Province

Telephone: +675474 5220 / 474 5343
Fax: +675 474 5284.

Pine Lodge Resort is a two-hour drive from Lae along a sealed highway through mountain scenery.

Built in the 1930's to cater for the gold rush, Pine Lodge retains it’s colonial charm in a landscaped setting.

The Location

Located in the sleepy township of Bulolo, Morobe Province, a historic “gold mining” township during the 1930’s and today the jumping off point for Aseki, home of the famous ‘Smoked Bodies’, and Wau.

Pine Lodge is situated in spacious landscaped grounds with swimming pool overlooking the township.

You arrive in Bulolo Valley and Wau, a historic "gold mining" township, where you can enjoy the cool fresh mountain air, play golf or tour the region to see relics of WWII, goldmines and dredges, the McAdam National Park and the smoked bodies at Aseki.

The lodge offers seventeen deluxe rooms with private facilities, balconies, satellite televisions, refrigerators and coffee and tea making facilities. There is also a swimming pool, a lounge, a restaurant and superb grounds.

RESTAURANT:

Our intimate a-la-carte restaurant is more like a ‘homely’ dining room with cocktail bar. Breakfasts are served outside on the terrace patio. Room service is also available.

Editors Tip:

If you plan on visiting Wau and Bulolo, take along a light cardigan or jumper as it can get cool in the evenings but generally the days are quite warm.

Pine Lodge Highland Resort

The Pine Lodge Highland Resort is located at Bulolo in the Morobe Highlands just a short flight from Port Moresby, Lae & Madang. It is set along a ridge overlooking the Bulolo Valley at an elevation of 1,500m, and the surrounding mountains covered with pine trees and rain forests are the habitat of many species of the famous "birds of paradise"and other wildlife indigenous to Papua New Guinea. It is also located near the Watut River which has regular white water rafting expeditions operated by Sobek Expeditions.

The historic Bulolo/Wau valleys were first opened for development after valuable gold was discovered at Edie Creek in 1926. Prospectors flocked to the area and pioneer aviators initiated numerous air services which established world records in airlifting huge gold dredges and equipment.

Today the dredges remain intact as rusting reminders of those exciting years. New gold mines have been established at Edie Creek and small alluvial gold mining is still actively carried out by smaller organisations, plus panning along the Bulolo River. There is also a large timber iAdustry and plywood factory located in the Bulolo Valley.

The Pine Lodge Resort is ideally located to enable access to Aseki, Menyamya and other smaller outstations which are th9 home of the Kukukuku people, once the most feared tribesmen in PNG. The Pine Lodge operates day excursions to Aseki where you can see these interesting and colourful people, observe their life style, perhaps witness a "sing sing" and inspect burial platforms in caves where mummified bodies are placed overlooking the valleys.

You can observe their unique salt making process and enjoy one of the most scenic areas in Papua New Guinea. Other excursions are available to Wau where you can inspect the Institute of Ecology and Zoo, Edie Creek Gold Mine, McAdam Park, the Butterfly and Insect Farm, Watut Villages and "birding" and orchid collecting amongst the pine and lush rain forest-there is plenty to do and see in this area of the Highlands.

Facilities at the Pine Lodge Resort include 16 de-luxe bungalows, each equipped with private bathroom, ISD/STD press button telephones, colour television with satellite broadcasts from Australia and the USA, plus an information channel which features cultural programs on PNG. Each room is attractively furnished with queen and single beds and there is a large balcony overlooking the Valleys.

The Lodge has a swimming pool, a large Haus Win central complex and cocktail Bar. The Restaurant offers a-la-carte dining. The spacious landscaped grounds of the Resort contain a collection of native orchids, plus a small aviary which houses different species of cockatoos and hombills from the area.

For the adventurous, whitewater rafting, trekking, gold panning and horse riding are available. Forthose wishing to see the culture you may see the "Mud Men" and other "sing sings" performed by the Watut, Siassi, Sepik and Kukukuku people by arrangement.
