Kainantu

Eastern highlands Cultural Centre in Kainantu:

The focus of the cultural centre is the pottery and it is for this that the centre has become best known. The clay for the pots is all acquired locally from different areas and until recently preparing the clay for use was a time consuming process, using only simple plaster beds.

In 1994 the centre invested in a variety of new equipment such as a mixer, filter press and pug mill which has reduced the preparation time from weeks to days.

Kainantu

POTTERY making in Papua New Guinea is no longer a form of art but is also a tourist attraction.

This traditional process has taken on a modern form in other parts of the country. And Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands Province is one such area.

While the Sepik River people of East Sepik Province are well known for their wood carvings, and the Oro people for their tapa cloths, the Kainantu people are known for producing the best pottery products in the country.

The products are not only sold domestically but also to tourists.

like other potters, the Kainantu people have a natural talent for creating attractive designs on the pots, mugs and other products with their bare hands.

the process is laboriously time-consuming but the hard work always pays off in the end with fine products.

The clay is not always easy to find and at times they travel as far as Arona valley, bordering Markham valley in the Morobe Province, to colelct the best clay for their purpose.

The clay is usually collected in wet areas. It is stored in sheds to dry before they could work on it. Once the clay is completely dry, the smash it to separate it from other unwanted objects and dirt.

Once this is done, the clay is mixed with water and stored in 44 gallon drums. After some time, the water is emptied and the clay is transferred to a special bed called the plaster bed.

Then the hard part of the process starts with the shaping of the clay into varying sizes and shapes.

A special poweder called glaze is added and the finished products are placed in a much bigger stove called the klin. the heat is set on 1300 degrees and the process takes 24 hours. The heat produces smooth and shinny surface on the products ot give them the best appearance to the satisfaction of customers and tourists.

The potters take advantage of cultural shows in Goroka, Lae, Mount Hagen and other large gatherings to display their products to customers and tourists.
