Invitation - The PricewaterhouseCoopers 2003 Walk for Life Corporate Challenge

Dear Corporate Citizen

PricewaterhouseCoopers, in association with the Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute and Port Moresby Road Runners, invite you and your staff to participate in the 2003 Walk for Life Corporate Challenge.

What is the event?

The event involves your organisation’s participation in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Walk for Life Corporate Challenge. The event is a fun run or walk to be held in Port Moresby on Sunday, 31st August, 2003. All you need to do is register your team/teams by completing the registration form and paying the registration fee. All monies received will be tax deductible to you and will go towards the funding of a Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute initiative. A more detailed brochure of the event and its aims, including registration forms
is attached.

What is the purpose of the event?

The PricewaterhouseCoopers Walk for Life Corporate Challenge is an initiative designed to encourage community participation in an activity that facilitates the funding of the endeavours of the Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute.

The Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute is a non-profit organisation established to undertake critical research into heart disease related illnesses and to provide awareness, support and develop ways to combat the growing incidence of heart disease in Papua New Guinea.

With your participation in this 2003 event, we will be able to contribute much needed financial support to this very worthy organisation.

What are the benefits to you?

The benefits of being part of this event are numerous:
  • the cause is worthy and is designed to create a greater level of awareness of general health and well-being, and especially about heart disease, amongst those in our community and in particular, our organisations
  • as everyone who participated last year will tell you, the event itself is a fun day aimed at bringing together employers, employees and their families. You can run, walk, roller-blade, push your children in their strollers, or generally participate in any way
  • there are great prizes to be won for individuals, teams and for the organisation
  • the event allows you to show case your organisation and its involvement in the general community; and
  • your registration and participation fee is tax deductible.
Conditions of Entry

Conditions of entry are attached. Please ensure you read the conditions and acknowledge your agreement by signing in the place provided. One “condition of entry” should be completed for each organisation (ie covering all teams and participants).

Why not join us?

We think this is a tremendous cause. The success of the event will benefit many less fortunate than ourselves.

We request that you send us your registration and signed condition of entry forms together with your cheque no later than 4.30pm Friday 22 August 2003. Should you have any queries, please contact Lynn Walsh (or Allyson Young, if Lynn is not available) of PricewaterhouseCoopers, on telephone 3211 500 (see other contact details listed below).

Yours sincerely

What is the PricewaterhouseCoopers Walk for Life Corporate Challenge?

The event involves your organisation’s participation in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Walk for Life Corporate Challenge. The event
is a fun run or walk.

The key objective of the event is to raise funds to support the efforts and endeavours of the Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute, a largely privately
funded, non-profit organisation.

All funds raised in this event will go towards a Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute initiative.

How can you participate?

You will need to complete the registration form attached, and remit it together with your team’s registration fee of K500 for each team. There is a maximum of 5 participants per team. Organisations can enter as many teams as they choose to.

Each organisation should identify one contact person (regardless of the number of teams within the organisation). It is through this contact person that we will ensure your team receives your registration package.

Many of you will know someone who has suffered a heart-related disease or disorder sometime in your life.

This might include a stroke, a heart-attack or some other coronary
illness. In PNG, reported cases have been growing considerably. At the
present time there are at least one to two reported cases a week. One
wonders about cases which are not reported.

In all cases the disease is preventative or curable….if only we were
able to fund more health awareness programs, or if hospitals had access to proper facilities.

Your participation can help us in this regard!

What is the format of the event?

Each organisation should encourage their staff to participate. They may wish to wear official corporate colours or uniforms to show case their
own organisations, or come in fancy dress.

Prizes for creativity and innovation will be awarded. The event will involve a 5km walk or run (whatever you chose to do) over the same course as set last year. Each participant will receive a course map in
their InfoKit following registration.

The run or walk is designed to cater for the more serious competitors as well as those wishing to participate purely for the fun. We would imagine
that for most people, it will be an opportunity to participate together with their fellow employees, their employers and their families in a fun-filled, yet important community event.

What’s in it for you?

Apart from a morning of fun and fitness for a good cause, a number of prizes will be presented on the day, covering, for example, the following
categories:
  • lucky draw prize
  • first male and female
  • first team
  • most creatively dressed team
  • largest corporate team participating in the event
  • encouragement award etc.
Note a sausage sizzle will be held at the completion of the race at the Ela Beach International School grounds.

The Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute was established in September 1995.

It’s aims are to:
  • provide top quality cardiac diagnostic investigative service to the general public in PNG;
  • conduct research in relation to heart disease; and
  • raise greater awareness on the risk factors giving rise to heart disease.
In a society where heart disease was negligible prior to the early ‘70s, it has unfortunately now become another significant health issue.

The Institute relies on the generosity of donors particularly in the private sector and the fund raising activities of its executive.

The Executive Committee comprises the following:

Patron: Lady Carol Kidu
Committee members:

Jonathan Seeto
Lady Stella Chan
Professor Isi Kevau
Rosemary Robertson
Rio Fioco
Sandra Pickworth
