The "Crocodile Initiation" - Come See the fascinating ritual! (November 5th - 8th)

A RARE AND PRIVILEGED INVITATION TO A SEPIK MENS INITIATION
YAMOK VILLAGE, MIDDLE SEPIK REGION, EAST SEPIK PROVINCE
PAPUA NEW GUINEA - 5th to 8th November 2004

Introduction
This is a very exceptional invitation to attend the "crocodile” initiation into manhood inside the men’s only Haus Tambaran. This custom is only practiced within the Middle Sepik River region, by these days, just a few villages.
It is steeped in great privacy, ancient custom and ritual and is the greatest and most intimate, personal moment in a young Sepik man's life in this area.
It is a great privilege for me to be invited to attend and bring visitors with me.

Itinerary
Thursday Evening 4th November
Visitors arrive in Wewak on the PX 126 Air Niugini flight from Port Moresby, Lae or Madang ETA 17.45hrs. Met at the airport and checked into 2* Hotel on the beach in Wewak. Overnight in hotel.

Friday 5th November
Transported to airport at 0700hrs to check-in for the 0800hrs MAF flight or chartered plane to the grass airstrip at Yamok village, a 40 min flight in a small 5 seater Cessna.

Singsing welcome from the village ladies.
Visit the Haus Tambaran where the initiation will take place. Meet the Chiefs and other initiated men.

Over night in the traditional village guest house.
Saturday 6th November 0800 hrs rise and breakfast for the start of the initiation day.
The guide will explain about this ancient custom and the meaning behind it, as much as he is allowed to, due to the secrecy of the tradition.
Witness the initiation ceremony. This takes most of the day.
Over night in the traditional village guest house.
