Art

The art room is open on Thursday afternoons to any of us students who want to do art and crafts, or if we wish, we are also free to continue with our work started in art class.

Miss Bonner, the art teacher, runs the art club and spends the afternoon helping the students or doing her own work. Up until now we have been making hammocks and pot plant hangers from macrame. In the last term, we will be doing copper enameling, when the equipment arrives.

Ms. Bonner in the middle of it all.

Social Activities

Any subject 1S bor1ng and un- interesting when only viewed formally. French and German have been made enjoyable and worthwhile, both for the students and the teachers, by using it as an excuse for small gatherings or parties or even just for outings, of course providing
that it is relevant to the subject.

During the year, a language club has been formed to encourage students to take an interest in languages by approaching it in a freer and more relaxed manner. French is offered to Frenc.h enthusiasts once every fortnight and alternatively, German. On these club days, students play French and German games such as Monopoly and Scrabble.

As well as this, films and video tapes are shown to give students an insight into the interest1ng aspects of French and German culture.

The French students, together with Mrs Colquhoun, played a small part in the celebration of the South Pacific Festival of Arts here in Lae.

Mrs Colquhoun was asked to translate for the visitors from New Caledonia during their brief stay here in the city. During that weekend, senior students from the school spent some of their time conversing with the New Caledonians.

Hard though it was they acceptec it as a challenge and as an opportunity) to practise the modest knowledge of the French language that they had.

A luncheon was held at MrsCo1quhoon's as a farewell to the visiting New Caledonians. In the afternoon, they went with us to Malahang beach for a picnic before their departure.

"Allons enfants de la patrie.. ." 14th of July - Bastille Day. We celebrated this very important French National Day by having luncheon parties.

Years 8,9 and 10 and 11 celebrated the occasion together.

As it was impossible to combine the Year 7 classes with them because of the large number of students taking the subject, it was necessary to celebrate the Bastille on two separate days. Nevertheless, although one was later than the other, the spirit of the Bastille was there.

Deutschland

The German students of Mrs. Colquhoun and Ms Foubister together had a typical German breakfast - such as Lae could offer - to sample German food. By doing this the students' palates were introduced to real German gastronomy.

At the end-of-term celebration the Language Club decided to have a dinner at Mrs Colquhoun's place, in style, with French and German cuisine.

This was followed by the Year 10 French dinner. Invited to this gathering was a French-speaking couple which made it necessary for the students to speak in French. It was an enjoyable dinner and a good end to the French lessons.

These are just a few of the activities which we have had this year, and more are yet to come to make the Language classes more enjoyable.
