Lae rugby league - a funny story (photo courtesy of Scott Martin)

The attached photo of Barry Orchard, PNG Captain, giving a half-time pep talk was sent to me by Scott Martin. My husband, Bob, remembers Barry well, and has a funny story to tell about him. He held a post-match party at his place one Saturday night in 1964, attended by 30 players. A memorable night, apparently. Well lubricated, they decided around midnight that Barry needed a swimming pool in his front yard and proceeded to dig up his lawn - after hanging one of the players in the closet with a coathanger through the back of his shirt to hold him upright. He'd broken his collarbone a week or so before, and had succumbed to alcohol-induced sleep, and they didn't want him to come to any harm. Some time around mid-morning on Sunday they remembered, after wondering why he hadn't put in an appearance, and opened the cupboard to find him still suspended there sound asleep. Bob doesn't remember his name, just that he worked for Westpac and was known as Winkie.
