More Lae photos from 1965

I lived in PNG from 1952 to April 1967, first in Rabaul, then Wau, then Lae from 1954 until coming south to get married to a bank johnny who did a three year stint in PNG. He took lots of slides while he was there, some of which I have scanned into my computer. Hopefully I've done this right and can share some of the Lae ones with you. If it works, this should show the Lae Club as it was in 1965.

Lae - Waratahs rugby league team 1965, unfortunately a bit out of focus. My husband, Bob Clarke, is second from the right.

One final photo and that'll do for now. I have more if anyone wants to see them. This is Johnathan Buruap and family outside their home in Second Street Lae. Johnathan was a clerk with the Commonwealth Bank, and his sons, Mark and Danny, played with my younger brother, Richard. We lived in the last house on the right at the end of Second Street, just before the footbridge over the barret that divided us from the MAL Club and airline quarters. My dad, **** Phillips, was a storeman with Post and Telegraphs and my mum, Sheila, ran the Coronation Primary tuckshop for a number of years and then worked in the Starr theatre milkbar. I had two younger sisters, Leonie and Diane, as well. The rest of my family left Lae for Sydney in 1966, and I followed with Bob in April '67.

Lae in 1965

Hi Muppie,

No TV either - at least not in PNG. That's why I became an artist, a bookworm, and eventually a writer. Not much else to do back then except swim, ride my bike and play rounders after school in someone's backyard. TV never did become a habit with me, though I watch it sometimes. On the other hand, I couldn't do without my PC. Imagine trying to edit a novel with only a typewriter or, worse still, pen and ink.
