Snippets from Lae Chamber

Here are a couple of warnings from the Lae Chamber that might be of interest to you all:

On a personal note, I refer to my daughter, who’s bag went missing on an Air Niugini flight from Port Moresby to Lae, when returning on holidays from Brisbane to Lae in December.

The bag turned up minus some personal belongings – a mobile phone, CD players and a digital camera.

My subsequent claim to Air Niugini was rejected with the following reasons:

“ Similar to the other Member Airlines of International Air Transport Association and under the conditions of our carriage, we do not accept liability for loss or damage of fragile or valuable or expensive articles including money which are carried as contents of checked baggage.

This information regarding valuable items is stipulated in the copy of the passenger’s ticket so that upon its purchase we can correctly assume that the passenger is aware of our conditions of carriage and has understood and accepted its contents. Therefore the passenger is bound these conditions which he/she has agreed with Air Niugini especially in respect to baggage.

Airline tariffs define luggage as clothing and toiletries necessary for comfortable travel and should a passenger elect to depart from this concept and utilise the airlines baggage service to transport items of a fragile or unusual nature, it is done so at the risk of the traveller”

I can see Air Niugini’s reasoning, however for those who have kids in schools, who return with all their belongings as they cannot store them at the school over the Christmas holidays, there is a risk of losing valuable goods without any chance of being compensated by Air Niugini. The other choice is to look at travellers insurance.

Is this still actual? I find it hard to believe that they didn't solve some of their problems in the meantime.
