Napatana Lodge, Milne Bay Province

Eco Tourism in Papua New Guinea

Milne Bay Province - ALotau
"Tranquil and Tantalising"

NAPATANA LODGE is Milne Bay's first eco lodge that opened on Independence Weekend 2001.

Owned and run by Michael and Gretta Todurawai, Pam Swanson and Murray Abel, it is a new concept in tourism that has caused Milne Bay to be called the first eco tourist destination in PNG.

Napatana Lodge is a huge pole house bar and restaurant, built in traditional style of local materials and is surrounded by a cluster of timber bungalows. A short track leads down to the beach and guests can walk along the beach into the town. The aim of the lodge is to promote Milne Bay culture.

All the staff are from Milne Bay. The furnishings and furniture have been made in Milne Bay. The food is locally purchased and prepared in Milne Bay style, cooked in clay pots. The staff uniforms have been locally designed and made.

The philosophy of the lodge is to support and enhance local tourism by developing land based tourism and developing the infrastructure to encourage tourists to travel into the villages. While diving is earning Milne Bay the reputation of being the best dive destination in the world, Napatana Lodge believes that there are equally stunning and exciting land based destinations.

Napatana Lodge is linked to a network of village guesthouses and exciting destinations. Milne Bay Magic Tours will design tours to individual requirements and budgets. The aim is to make it easy for travellers to visit the villages to bring income to the rural areas and to promote an understanding of true Milne Bay culture.

Napatana staff are slowly identifying places of local interest and encouraging the owners to develop their own resources for tourism. Milne Bay is a peaceful place and at only 45 minutes' flying time from Port Moresby, provides and excellent opportunity for the city residents to escape from behind the wire into a peaceful, carefree environment for a weekend retreat.

Milne Bay Province is located at the most eastern point of Papua New Guinea. There are seven groups of islands, the Trobriand, Woodlark, Laughlan, Louisiade Archipelago, Conflict Group, Samarai Group and the D'Entrecasteau Group. The names originate from a variety of explorers from as early as 1660.

Over the years, Milne Bay Province has been visited by a diverse group of people ranging from missionaries, scientists, traders in pearls, to Japanese and Allied troops. The battle for Milne Bay in 1942 saw the Allied troops defeat the Japanese, in one of the most decisive campaigns of the war.

The island of Samarai in the China Straits is the gateway to the islands of the Calvados Chain, the Conflicts and Engineer group. Throughout the islands, white sandy beaches are surrounded by turquoise sea, islanders enjoy a traditional lifestyle and live in harmony with the greatest, bio diversity marine habitat in the world. The world-renowned Trobriand Islands dubbed the "Island of Love" by the anthropologist Malinowski, are hypnotic, romantic and captivating. This is the home of the famous yam festival in July.
