2004 Goroka Show expected to be bigger and better


THE WORLD’S famous Goroka Show will be staged in two months from now and is expected to be bigger and better with displays of best traditional dances and cultural flavors from all corners of the country.

It will be a three-day event from September 17-19.

The 2004 Goroka Show Committee members were appointed recently comprising prominent Eastern Highlands people to organize the 2004 show, which will be staged at the National Sports Institute grounds.

The committee comprises of businessman Auwo Ketauwo CBE, who was re-elected as president, Orike Bao, president of Henganofi local level government (LLG) who was elected vice president and Andrew Sufie, re-elected as secretary/treasurer and Jack Gopave as coordinator. Other members of the committee are Paul Frame, Walter Nombe, Sir Akepa Miakwe and Simon Parak.

The committee thanked the Governor of Eastern Highlands,Malcolm Smith Kela, the business houses and the general public for making last year’s shows a great success.

President, Auwo Ketauwo, in a meeting last week thanked police and the private security firm engaged last year who worked hard to make sure their was normalcy and a peaceful celebration at the event.

Mr Ketauwo made a special mentioned of companies namely, SP Brewery, Goroka Builders, Super Value Stores, Triton Stores, Goodman Fielders, New Guinea Highlands Coffee Exports, Coffee Industry Corporation, Rural Development Bank, Bank South Pacific, Goroka Coffee Roastes, Koodu Security Services, Guard Dog Security and Securimax.

The show was a major attraction for overseas tourists. The number of overseas last year saw an increase in numbers.

Mr Ketauwo said last year over 100 tourists came from as far as Europe and America for the show. The Committee thanked the Trans Niugini Tours, New Guinea Wokabaut Tours, Paradise Tours, Melanesian Tourist Service and Bird of Paradise Hotel for bringing the tourists to the Goroka Show.

“There are indications that many are coming for this year’s show,” the president said.

“This shows that despite the bad publicity Papua New Guinea has received overseas, many tourists are happy to come and enjoy the cultural show staged in various parts of the country.

Many of the tourists who have been to PNG know that while the country does have problems, one can still visit the country and have a wonderful holiday.

Mr Ketauwo said more then 50 singsing groups are expected to participate in this year’s show.

Other side activities will include arts and crafts, the musical amphitheater, beauty contest, traditional salt making, boxing, martial arts, and many more.

Mr Ketauwo said stall and Marques are very limited. Marquees are allocated to especially commercial interests who wish to display and promote their products. Fees are charged according to space and type of display, whether commercial or educational and interested person or organisation should inquire early to secure one. The application will be made available soon at the show office.
