Escape Travel Show - ultimate marketing venue for PNG

The 2005 Sunday Mail Escape Travel Show held in Brisbane proved to be the ultimate venue to market Papua New Guinea’s unique culture and various holiday destinations to the world.

PNG was among 250 exhibitors from various countries in the world who took part in the three-day travel show held from April 8 – 10 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Center on South Bank, Australia.

PNG had two single stands during the show put on by PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) and a major tour operator along Kokoda Trail, namely, Kokoda Trekking Limited along with the PNG Business & Tourism Directory - a promoter of internet marketing for PNG tourism, cultures and businesses overseas through its popular website – (www.pngbd.com).

Staffs from both the TPA and Kokoda Trekking were on hand to promote the country’s unique culture, and various tourist destinations and activities.

Many showed their interests in visiting PNG shores and purposely to do diving, trekking, mountain climbing, sight-seeing and to watch the annual cultural events and etc.

On the TPA side, Marketing Manager Jimmy Yimisopa and Alice together with Pam Christie, an expert trekker kept a close monitor on their stand and from our end (Kokoda Trekking/PNGBD) Chris Suma an experienced Kokoda guide appeared confident in his traditional Oro costume, a painted face and a ukulele in hand while Shane, Nathan, Sheree and Mikayla Thomas, each gave a hand to help promote Kokoda Trail during the three days.

Chris, who was totally oblivious of his unusual appearance despite stares from the visiting crowd, walked around from one end of the Exhibition Hall 2 to another strumming his Ukulele and all the time singing (sometimes whistling) in the company of Mikayla who continued to dish out browsers to visitors.

The Kokoda Trail alone became a hot topic. A lot of interest was shown in trekking the renowned 96km WWI trail which runs from Oro and along the Owen Stanley Ranges. Many sought to know more about the track after having heard about it from friends who’ve trekked or through the media.

The show attracted thousands of visitors including travelers who were looking for the latest information and advice on destinations, travel, accommodation, adventures and holiday packages and etc.

Five large zones have been designated at the expo and are dedicated to different visitors’ travel needs: Adventure Zone, Australian Zone, International Zone, New Zealand Zone and Snow-Go Zone and PNG came under the Adventure Zone.

PNG was finally recognized for its efforts when Kokoda Trekking was announced the winner of the Best Single-booth scheme award.

It was the first time the Kokoda Trekking participated in the event and with very little expectation. However, much to the company’s surprise they came out the winner.

When told about the award, the company's boss and Kokoda Trekking trek organiser, Gail Thomas, said:

"We did not just win for us, but the whole of Papua New Guinea. When you get out there you go on behalf of PNG, and we are not just promoting trekking but the culture and tourism in the country. We are marketing PNG to the world."
