PNG has one of the highest rates of women dying from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications in the world.

According to statistics from the Health Department, the maternal mortality rate to date is 370 per 1,000 mothers and that 60 percent of our mothers are delivering without medical care or supervision.

As the majority of the country's populationlives in the rural areas, many are not aware of the risks involved in pregnancies and childbirth and factors that can contribute to these risks.

Statistics also show that women face a higher rish of becoming infected and burdened by AIDS than men.

in PNG recent statistics from the National AIDS Council Secretariat September quarterly report states that the number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country has increased to 4,415 and the highest incidence occurs amongst young people, most cases including women between the ages of 15 to 29.

The highest prevalence rate is among sex workers (16 per cent), however a review of available data found that 24 percen of HIV positive gave their occupation as housewife.
