Following Kokoda’s 60th anniversary, many Australian veterans of Salamaua also want their battlefield to be accorded the same recognition, as it too has its 60th anniversary next September.

The same call has been echoed by old men in the Salamaua villagers – many of whom have died without being justly compensated – who served as carriers for both Australians and Japanese during WW11.

Maybe then, at least for a day, Salamaua will rise again.

I do not know about the rest of you who have ever lived in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea, but I personally have had a trip down memory lane.

For those of you viewing these photographs and reading the story, perhaps it will show you a quiet peaceful little beach, which has been a part of history for Papua New Guinea. Many a family living in Lae, has escaped to this island to get away for the weekend.

We sincerely hope you have enjoyed this story and photographs provided to us by Malum Nalu.

Our sincere thanks Malum from :

Photos Salamaua 1941

Hi Gang,
Im attaching a couple of photos I've made clips from my uncle's 16 mm colour movies he took in 1940 / 41.
Using my computer, I've pasted a number of stills together from panning shots he took.
The ship was being unloaded on the NW side of the isthmus.
Now! who can help me with identifying places like the Hotel Salamaua etc and can anyone tell me what the bois in the canoe are doing. My uncle was frugal with his film and generally took short clips, yet this canoe was filmed cruising back and forward for 34 seconds... one of the longest single shots in the one hour of film I have a copy of.
I'll be submitting about eighty photos to the forum depicting Guinea Airways life back in 1941 shortly.
Regards
Den
