PNG Power

Three cheers for PNG Power who worked through the night to restore power to our compound.

Approximately 6am on Wednesday morning, our compound resembled fire crackers on New Years Eve as power lines hit up against the branches of a tree in our yard.

A quick phone call to Elcom requesting the power turned off did not immediately result in them cutting our power, however around 7:45 there was a big bang and one of the lines completely broke and power to the compound was gone !

After phoning operations once again to report the matter I was informed that a transformer outside the compound had blown as a result of the storm and that they would fix the problem.

Later in the day around 3pm, I received a voice message stating that someone was working on the problem some 2k away from the compound and that power would be restored late that afternoon.

Around 7pm that night many workers were in our compound cutting down the branches of the tree in our yard.

Following are pictures of the results.

The end result - power restored - but feel sorry for this poor tree, one of two butchered in the process :

If my security guards saw that they'd have it cut to the ground in no time at all.

Try driving around Boroko and you'll find that some of the good shades provided by the rain trees there are gone. Guess PNG Power is hellbent on completely getting rid of trees and not clearing those branches only that are hazardrous to the power cables. PNG Power should start employing people with the know how to only clear branches and not murder the beautiful trees.
