DWM #409 in May 2009 has a feature on the then upcoming Torchwood: Children of Earth that coming July and it included an interview with James Moran who had co-written Day Three with Russell T. Davies.

Children of Earth had featured Peter Capaldi as John Frobisher and Capaldi had earlier been in Doctor Who: The Fires of Pompeii playing Caecilius and also written by Moran.

In this interview Moran said he didn't know Capaldi was going to play John Frobisher until a couple of drafts in and was thrilled".

Moran:

"He did such a great job in Pompeii, and I'm a huge fan of his work anyway, so it was great to be able to write for him again in the Whoniverse, but in another time period."

Unfortunately Moran did not get to write for Capaldi when he became the Twelfth Doctor later on.

However a clip of Fires of Pompeii with Capaldi as Caecilius was included in The Girl Who Died as the Doctor realised why he has the face that he has.

Also Hell Bent had the Doctor saving Clara from the Raven at the last minute and it was a virtual re-enactment to when the Doctor saved Caecilius and his family at the last minute in The Fires of Pompeii.

The Last Dodo:
The Last Dodo is a novel featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha.
Written by Jacqueline Rayner and released in April 2007.
At the same time in reading the novel I also listened to the abridged audio book of this read by Freema Agyeman (Martha).
Among the bits excluded from the audio book version is the I-Spyder e-book that Martha constantly checks up on. By excluding the I-Spyder book it also excludes a sizable chunks of the novel.
I-Spyder bears similarities with the real-life I-Spy line of books.
A most probable explanation for this is that I-Spyder may have stepped on to copyright issues with I-Spy which therefore warranted its exclusion from the audio book.
Also not included is Rayner writing that Martha found medical dramas hilarious after she started at the hospital.
The book and audiobook were released in 2007 when Freema was playing Martha in her only season as the full-time companion and it would be ironic, especially if she did not know about it, on Freema not reading what Martha thought about medical dramas.

This is because these days Freema is in New Amsterdam, which is a medical drama!

In New Amsterdam she plays Dr Helen Sharpe and it is easy to imagine that Helen is what Martha could have been if she hadn’t met the Doctor.

In The Last Dodo, the Doctor and Martha search for a real live dodo when they found themselves in the Museum of the Last Ones.
The task of this museum is to collect the last of every endangered species in the universe but exhibits are going missing hence an investigation by the Doctor and Martha.
This book presents an enjoyable mystery with the missing exhibits most especially that certain revelation about the villain Eve.

The fun bit with The Last Dodo is that the Doctor named the said dodo, Dorothea with Martha having no idea why.
It is not stated in the book itself but long term fans knows that Dorothea is the full name of First Doctor companion whose name is Dodo.

To add to all this, the last bit of how all this came to be is both fascinating and haunting at the same time.

Rewatched Smile which guest starred Ralf Little.
Coincidentally I have seen Little recently as the new detective in Death In Paradise.
Smile also guest stars Mina Anwar.
She was previously Gita Chandra in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Recently her SJA daughter Anjli Mohindra (Rani) was Queen Skithra in Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror.

42 x 8 - The Haunting of Villa Diodati:

Penultimate story of season 42.

Doctor Who debut by writer Maxine Alderton.

Villa Diodati is a mansion which is well known for being rented by Lord Byron and visited there by Percy and Mary Shelley.

Big Finish had presented Mary Shelley as a companion of the Eighth Doctor and played by Julie Cox.

In The Haunting of Villa Diodati has Mary Shelley or Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin as she was known here played by Lili Miller. I had thought she had looked familiar but when I look her up on IMDb she has two previous credits neither of which I had seen.

However I soon realise that she look like another actress Imogen Waterhouse who have seen in the TV series The Outpost.

Playing Dr John Polidori is Maxim Baldry. Last year 2019, Baldry was in Years and Years.

This starts with a cold opening, the second consecutive story to have one, the first time in the Whittaker era and notwithstanding the Skyfall two-parter.

Funny when Lord Byron said that there was nothing to be afraid of, only for a terrified Doctor and friends to turn up at the door marking the end of the cold opening.

Fun seeing the dance.

Creepy when that spider-like thing turned up.

Taken aback when Graham went around in a circle at the staircase but this was only the first of many circular occurrences.

The spider-like thing grab Ryan by the neck and made me think of the Auton hand doing the same thing to the Ninth Doctor in Rose.

The helmet worn by the Doctor made think of Hugh Grant wearing a similar one in Sirens.

Amusing when Graham says he sees dead people, The Sixth Sense reference.

The Doctor keeps getting called Mrs Doctor.

If the Doctor was still a man I doubt he would have been called Mr Doctor and this was set in 1816 when female physicians were completely unheard at the time as this was five years before the birth in 1821 of Elizabeth Blackwell, the world's first female physician.

Funny when the Doctor made the anachronistic statement of the resumption of normal service.

The Doctor gave the definition of a zombie being a dead person walking.

This episode came on February 16 2020 and if it had come exactly a week later on February 23 it would have been on the same day of the start of the second half of season 10 of the zombie series The Walking Dead!

I had gotten a hint that this would be linked with the two-part Cybermen story that ends this season but it still took me by surprise when the Lone Cyberman turned up as I had no idea it would take centre stage here.

Big Finish had Mary Shelley (Julie Cox) meeting another Lone Cyberman the titular The Silver Turk.

Wonder if The Haunting of Villa Diodati can be reconcile with The Silver Turk.

There was literally writing on the wall and it was fun when Yaz pointed that out.

Was shocked when the Lone Cyberman did not speak in a mechanical voice but in a normal voice.

Intriguing how Percy Shelley came into this and how it relates to the Lone Cyberman.

Funny when the Doctor suggested to the Lone Cyberman that they split up for a search, in other words an opportunity for the Doctor to get away from him.

This has been a haunting (pun intended) episode and good, the somewhat temporary solution the Doctor came up with the Lone Cyberman with it being step 1.

Now for step 2 which is to fix up the mess with step 1.

Very good episode and the reading by Lord Byron certainly reflects on what the Doctor is about to face.
