No qualification needed for coffee growing

by JAMES KILA

"You do not need any qualification whatsoever to grow coffee,"

That was the message from the Chief Executive Officer of the Coffee Industry Corporation Ltd, Ricky Mitio at the closing of the fourth PNG Coffee Festival and Trade Fair last Saturday.

"Coffee has become part of our lives and culture. It is also plays a very important role in the social and economic well-being of the people in the Highlands and the country as a whole," Mr Mitio stated.

"Therefore, the crop has to be treated with utmost respect because it is a sustainable employer and a fall-back position to anyone in the Highlands who has land to plant coffee," Mr Mitio stated.

Mr Mitio said thousands and thousands of target groups will go back to the land compared to colleges and universities, which turn out hundreds and only a few go back to the land.

Coffee is one of the biggest industry in PNG and thus provide a fall-back position for many people after they complete their term in the public service or corporate
