2007 Goroka show best in the world, says Japanese tourist

GOROKA: THE Eastern Highlands cultural show is the best cultural festivity in the world, according to a Japanese tourist.
Irene Gashu who is a member of the PNG Japan Association described the diversified cultural heritage in Papua New Guinea and Goroka show as undeniably unique in the world.

She told The National that she had been to several cultural festivals in 81 countries in the world but has never seen any festival as attractive and uniquely diverse as those displayed at the Goroka show.

“I’ve been to 81 countries around the world and has seen some the festivals, but my favorite is Goroka show because no other cultural festivals are comparable to Goroka show, your culture is very unique in the world,” Ms Gashu said.

The visit was her fifth consecutive visit to the Goroka show.

She presented K3,000 cash and a Japanese Music box to the winner of the 2007 Miss Goroka show contestant Ms Joyce Kasa.

Ms Gashu also presented a Japanese doll to the runner up of the quest Gamela Benny who walked away with K2, 000.

Lynannah Baiyo received K1, 000 the third runner-up while EDZ Automotive sponsored Fethy Kaupa received K150 of the Provincial AIDS Council sponsored K300.

Ms Gashu said Japan is a modern country with its own traditional culture like PNG, and the sponsorship is to encourage young girls to prioritise culture as important in their lives.

Prominent female community leader and Bilum Wear advocate Florence Jaukae coordinated the 2007 Miss Goroka show contest.

Young University Centre Administration officer Joyce Kasa won the contest and walked away with K3,000 out of a K6,000 sponsorship by Coral Sea Hotels.

Manager of the Bird of Paradise Hotel Greg Leatham officially presented the money to the winner and runner of the contest on behalf of Coral Sea Hotels.

Speaking at the show, Goroka MP Thompson Harokaqveh urged people in the province to use their initiative to make it number one in the country.

He said EHP has improved from 17 to three in terms of being the least developed province in the country. He wants to see it become number one in 18 months.
