PNG Coffee Festival and Trade Fair

A total 18 companies, government organizations, non – government organizations and schools have to date confirmed their participation in the PNG Coffee Festival and Trade Fair which will be held at the Raun Raun Theatre in Goroka on May 2 and 3.
.
They include the Post – Courier, PNG’s leading daily newspaper, which has generously offered free advertising prizes for six of the top stalls.

This, however, is just the tip of the iceberg and organizer Norman Carver envisages more organizations and individuals to confirm their participation in a flurry over the next couple of weeks.

“Thing are still slow, but this is normal,” Mr Carver said.

“It all happens with a rush in late April.”

The Coffee Industry Corporation, regulator of this multi – million kina industry, through Chief Exeutive Officer Ricky Mitio has kindly offered sponsorship in cash and kind and as well will be taking up a large display stall.

Three of the 20 licensed coffee exporters – PNG Coffee Exports, New Guinea Highlands Coffee Exports, and Big Bean Coffee of Wau in Morobe Province – have taken the lead in confirming participation.

Likewise, the National Agriculture Research Institute, whose presence will be a boon for all farmers who will be present.

The carnival, of course, would be incomplete without the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government who will be taking up a large outdoor stall to show the work that they do.

From the banking sector comes Bank South Pacific and ANZ Banking Group, who made their debut last year and continue the tradition this year.

Then there is the hometown proud world – renowned Institute of Medical Research, University of Goroka, National Film Institute, and leading NGO Research and Conservation Foundation.

Leading agricultural supplier Brian Bell, Pacific Helicopters (which will be offering a helicopter ride for one lucky person), new company Info – Link, Goroka International School, and the new Goroka Grammar School bring up the balance.

Open invitations have been extended to businesses, government departments and agencies, NGOs, foreign missions and trade delegations, as well as individuals to take up stalls and participate in the event.

If brought to its most simple form, the PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair attempts to improve prosperity for individuals and the business community through the promotion & development of coffee and agriculture.

It emphasizes further, that to attain this wealth, individuals in the community must become productive.

Producing better quality raw coffee must be targeted foremost, and secondly the volume of production increased.

As a consequence of the PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair, many growth - inhibiting factors will be identified and made known to the public.

One major example is that coffee growing areas cannot access markets as the road networks deteriorate.

This has been well publicised in recent months since the 2002 PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair statement by Australian Deputy High Commissioner Nick Coppel.

However, there are other issues and factors and they also need to be identified and addressed.

As the coffee harvest is seasonal, significant stress is placed on businesses, which attempt to maintain continuity of trading in a full calendar year.

The PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair, therefore, also attempts to bring advisors who display alternate income earning activities during the non-coffee time.

These alternatives are agriculture - based.

During the two - day festival and expo, it is envisaged that a wide range of business stalls including real estate, hotels, carriers, coffee exporters, government coffee agencies, community groups, universities, colleges, commercial banks, the Institute of Medical Research, conservation groups, non coffee manufacturers, agricultural suppliers, radio and computer technology companies, school groups, and many others will also take part.

Apart from the business end of the PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair, it is also intended to be a fun time for the entire family with both entertainment and educational activities planned.
