Provincial Flags of Papua New Guinea - Meaningful symbols

Papua New Guinea is very unique from the rest of the world in that it is made up of over 1000 tribes with diverse cultural practises and unique lifestyles.
It is the only country in the world that practises are over 800 different languages as researchs confirmed.

It is of this fact that the country has been divided into 19 provinces including Port Moresby - as its main capital. But even each provinces are made up of totally different lifestyles and cultural backgrounds, different languages and many small tribes or clans.

Each provinces in the country can be easily identified by their flags which bears its official symbols or sacred designs. The symbols particularly represent, animals or plants (some which are considered important in the society), sacred rituals and others represent prevalent traditional activities.

The Flag symbols have stories to tell and was specifically designed by each person from each province.

Take for example our colourful Red, Gold, & Black spotted with five stars and bird of Paradise as the nation's symbol PNG flag. This was designed by Susan Huhume - from Gulf province.

The PNG national flag carries the Bird Of Paradise as the national symbol. The bird is one of the unique species of the World and only found in PNG.

The Bougainville Flag

As I am originally from Bougainville I can shed some light on this.

The Bougainville flag has blue as the background colour with a circular shpe in the middle. The outer circle is white and marked with green and white triangles - the shapes are created by drawing a zigzag line around it. From where I come from (Buka Island) the same designs are drawn in straight line on the side of "mona" ( a huge traditional canoe without the outrigger used for fishing in the early days) . The design represents waves. (if my memory serves me right).

The inner circle is black with a traditional "Upe" ( a jar shaped long hat worn by one of the tribes in the mainland Bougainville). Those who wore this were considered sacred and nobody was allowed to go close to them.

I don't know the original designer of this flag.

I would need some help with the other flags though. Maybe those of you from these provinces can help me out here.

The Bougainville Flag (lighter color was re-designed by Mark Sensen)

This flag has the same background color as the National Flag with Bird Of Paradise on one side and five stars on the other. The symbols are spears with wings of the bird.
