Goroka’s very own bread made from local wheat and kaukau by James Kila

NAMI Yangotona is content with what little he has to produce home-grown bread scones, meat-pie and bread. The ingredients utilized are mostly from his own garden at Kama No.2 village near Goroka.

Yantogona developed his interest in using local vegetables after being a teacher at Kevamugl district bible school in the Chimbu province.

“After being a teacher I got so interested in using our local fruits and vegetables so after I left teaching I decided that I should bring this interest to other interested citizens of PNG,” Yantogona said.

The garden produce he uses for making his products are things such as garlic, spring onion, sweet potato, kaukau, pumpkin, peanuts, soya bean, sorghum and banana.

The wheat used to bake bread and scones are harvested from his half-a-hectare block at Kama village.

“I want to concentrate more on my local crops to make breads and cereals,” Yantogona said.

Some of his clients in Goroka are Marquill Press, the Gehamojuha clan of Kama, PNG Motors and those who meet him.

He also has five village girls whom he trains to work on producing bread and scones using local vegetables.

Yangotina was able to display his products in Goroka at the recent PNG Coffee Festival and Trade Fair. Other displays were at the World Food Day. His displays outside Goroka was at the Morobe Show and the Mt Hagen Show.
