Salamaua Haus Kibung back in business by Malum Nalu

Salamaua, located approximately 35km from Lae or a scenic one hour boat ride, offers the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Long time Lae residents would remember the Salamaua Haus Kibung when it was first opened in the 1980s.

Back then, the Haus Kibung offered the perfect escape for the weekend, and Lae residents flocked to Salamaua by the droves.

However, over the years, the Haus Kibung started deteriorating until it was no longer operational and covered by bush.

The good news is that Salamaua Haus Kibung is back in business and Lae residents as well as visitors can go there for a great time.

Caretaker Mathew Gomuna, a cheerful fellow from Garaina in Morobe Province, has been working hard over the last couple of years to ensure that the Haus Kibung reaches those heights of the 80s.

Salamaua Haus Kibung has 22 chalets which go for K20 a person per night, as well as 10 large family sized rooms which go at K65 a night.

This includes electricity, gas cooking facilities, and shower and toilet facilities.

Full conference facilities are available for groups wanting to hold meetings or gatherings in the tranquil surroundings of Salamaua.

The main guest area up front beside the sea offers barbeque facilities.

Mr Gomuna can arrange for tours around the Salamaua area as well as treks around in and around this historic place, as well as along the infamous Black Cat Trail on to the gold mining town of Wau.
