Sarita's Sailing Trip on board "STS Leeuwin II"

A group of people, who live in Darwin Australia, headed out to sea for an unforgettable journey of a life time, on board “STS Leeuwin II”. For most of the crew members, they didn’t really know much about themselves nor about the ship before heading out to sea. The journey started on the 9th and was set to end on the 20th, August.

The travel route in which the group travelled around the northern tip of Australia

Sarita Lawler one of the crew members, was on the trip as well. She had just finished walking the infamous World War II Kokoda Trail, just 1 month ago, before heading back to Australia to do another journey, only this time it was not about walking or climbing mountains, but instead sailing. Sarita decided to go to these sailing trip, to step out of her comfort zone to meet new people, learn new skills and get over her fears with height.
Sarita knew only two of her students from school apart from the fifty-three on board. But they were seperated nearly the entire trip, which was a great opportunity to get to know and meet new people.

Sarita and friends, all smiles for the camera.

Sarita said she was looking forward for the trip, but the only thing that worried her most, was that she was afraid of heights, and didn’t know if she was able to climb the mast, but then thought that if she could climb all those mountains up at Kokoda, that shouldn’t be a problem at all.And she did climb the mast about 33m above sea level, learn how to set and furl sails (put them up and take them down), learned how to be sea sick!
They stopped at Victorian Settlement (atempt at making a new city in the Gulf of Carpenteria), stopped at Bathurst Island and met members on the local Aboriginal Community. The Aboriginal community shared bush tucker with them and entertained them for the day.

Though the weather was rough at times and some of the ship members were sea sick, most of the days it was nice and smooth. Other then that, everyone had an awesome time out.

Sarita sent me a couple of pictures, showing some of the interesting things they did and also some beautiful shots she took. Enjoy…
