Question Working in Lae

I'm thinking of taking up a job offer in Lae, overseeing a sawmilling operation for an Italian man by the name of Mario. The mill is about 4 km out of Lae, and is a rather big operation.

I've not been to PNG before, but I have worked for several years on remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Can anyone give me some idea of what life in Lae is like? Are there many Aussies and other westerners in residence there?

Are the nationals as dangerous as some tourist websites would have me believe? I am an adventurous soul, and I love fishing.

Any info would be welcome. Thanks.

Cheers Noddy1. I haven't heard back yet. I take it Mario is a bit of a character. I spoke at length with him on the dog and bone.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Lae is definitely not as dangerous as what you might assume from viewing of other mentioned sites. Lae I beleive is a much safer and cheaper place to work and live in. I myself have been working and living in Lae for the last 9 years.

In terms of the working population of expatriates here, you will surely find heaps of them around..Just check out places like the Aviat Club, Lae Yacht Club, Lae International, you'll always find someone to enjoy your beer with!

cheers!
