School - Igam Barracks

I was at Igam Barracks school from 1970 - 1973, my brother was at Lae High. I have heaps of photos from school and the barracks. My dad was quartermaster at the time. Colonel Harrington and Colonel Cole were our CO's during that time. I also have lots of stories!

Smile School Igam Barracks

Hi Libby,

What a small world (with the internet anyway!). Have attached a shot from "our" house in the barracks. My father worked for/with your father.

Regards

Scott Walters I think was at Igam- Walters was his last name and a good mate at the time. We used to get busted by his Dad (Colonel Wlaters?) for bringing half of Nadzab back to our house each week, and playing with UXB's Cheers, Chris Durman

Hi Chris,
Same circa as me at Lae High (1971 and 1972). Do you have any school pictures. I have a few of my brothers friends. Did you know Michael Natera, and the Richardson brothers?

Memories of Igam Barracks

I was at Igam Barracks in 70/71/72 and went to Lae High School. I remember the Lauws (they were our neighbours) also the Francis, Walters, Melling, Ottaway, Harrington, Sullivans just to name a few from the barracks. I hung out with Bronwyn Dillon, Cathy Fowler, Glen Sharpe, Greg Kelly at school. I remember going to the Saturday matinee in town. Mum use to work in the shoe shop there.

I remember a band I think it was called the Y-Mees. We were pretty insulated out at the barracks, but I have fond memories of my time there.

I did know Sue Hall (an army wife) whose family lived there and she took me to ride her horse and spend the day with her family. It was one of the most exhilarating days of my young life.

My father had a vw, so did the Channons and the Fletchers and we would go on many adventures driving around the area. We have some slides of the 3 volkswagens crossing creeks and driving on the old tarmac at Nadzab (which I know believe is the airport servicing Lae. Correct me if I am wrong.

On our arrival into New Guinea we had a stop over at Port Moresby and I met a woman by the name of Mrs. Rowe who I wrote to for a short period of time. She had an adopted girl named Maria, but also six (or there abouts) of her own children. The family lived in the highlands and were teachers at a mission school. I don't have the letters anymore, but I still have the photos she sent me. Would love to know her story or about her family if anyone knows of them.

This is a great site. Cheers to all. Paula

I went to Igam primary, Still have the school badge. i remeber the mums sewing the green and gold stipes on our shirt pockets.

I also remember San and her brothers. There were 3 I think or at least 2 that were walking. They lived around the corner on Kakoda Cres.
My dad ran the Signals Centre.
My brother became very ill and we had to return to Australia.
I sat next to Guy in grade 6.

Igam Barracks or Lae High

Hi Peter,

Pretty sure I remember you - my sister Sian had 3 brothers one of which was me. If you sat next to a Guy - was it Guy Melling. If you have any pictures of Igam Barracks I would love to see.

Regards

San
