Board chairman, Wahega Katue, said Kikori has the potential to become a major tourist attraction but there had been no such body in the past to promote the area.

He appealed to all public servants, East and West Kikori Local Level Governments, Non Government Organisations, and business houses in the area to work together to promote tourism and revive cultures and traditions.

“The Kikori Basin covers an area of 2.3 million hectares and stretches from the extensive mangrove wetlands of the Gulf Province to the alpine grasslands of Doma Peaks in the Southern Highlands Province.

“The area contains a rich array of birds-of-paradise species and the world's only underground roosting bird.

“Many species in the area, such as 12 kinds of fish found in Lake Kutubu, are not found anywhere else in the world.

“The world's longest lizard, the world's largest egg-laying mammal, the world's largest pigeon, the world's second largest butterfly, and the world's largest moth all rank amongst the more spectacular wildlife to be found in the Kikori Basin.
