Medics call to ban ‘fibro’

Medics call to ban ‘fibro’
By ERIC TAPAKAU

THOUSANDS of Papua New Guineans have been continuously exposed to hazardous asbestos as many buildings throughout the country were built in colonial days using fibro.
The medical fraternity has expressed grave concern at the continued use of the material for construction of buildings despite a complete ban on it in developed and some developing countries as the material is responsible for promoting mostly respiratory illnesses that cause cancer.
President of the PNG Medical Society Dr Mathias Sapuri said some of his members had evidence of people that had the presence of Mesiothelioma, which proved that they had been exposed to asbestos.
Building industry experts said Asbestos products that are sealed and in good condition and not shedding fibres are not a health risk. However such products remain a hazard and may present a risk in the future if they are drilled or sanded, or if they deteriorate to produce dust.
Illnesses related to old or continuous exposure to hazardous building materials have been diagnosed to be killing Papua New Guineans.
And the PNG Medical Society wants relevant government authorities to immediately ban the importation of fibro for construction of buildings.
President Mathias Sapuri in reacting to reports published by this newspaper recently said that while there had been rare cases of cancer caused by asbestos, doctors had carried out biopsies on cancer patients and they found them to have Mesiothelioma, which proved that they were exposed to fibro materials.
Building industry experts said Asbestos products that were sealed and in good condition and not shedding fibres were not a health risk. However such products remain a hazard and may present a risk in the future if they are drilled or sanded, or if they deteriorate to produce dust.
The main resultant of long term or continuous exposure to asbestos is Mesiothelioma, a cancer of the pleural lining of the chest cavity, or more rarely of the peritoneal lining of the abdominal cavity.
“The Medical Society of Papua New Guinea is sending out a strong message for a complete ban of asbestos in PNG,” Dr Sapuri said.
“While developed countries and some developing countries have banned this material, appropriate building authorities in PNG should also ban the importation of fibro.”
He said there was evidence to show that cancer caused by exposure to asbestos was present in PNG and the Government should seriously look at banning it completely.
Dr Sapuri said many low cost houses and houses built during the colonial days had fibro used in them and in five to 20 years time the country may see serious side effects of asbestos in PNG.
“There are many people exposed to it and yes we do have evidence (illnesses caused by asbestos) and we need to be vigilant,” he said.
He said there were a lot of cancer types in the country and there was also lack of serious biopsy and families should allow for biopsy to establish the type of cancer in the patient’s bodies.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral with long, thin fibrous crystals. The word asbestos (ἄσβεστος) is a borrowed Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable. The Greeks termed asbestos the miracle mineral because of its soft and pliant properties, as well as its ability to withstand heat.

Asbestos can be toxic. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma (a type of malignant neoplasm dependent mostly from exposure to asbestos),[citation needed] and asbestosis (a type of pneumoconiosis). Since the mid 1980s, the European Union and most developed countries have banned asbestos.[citation needed]. Since January 1 2005 the European Union has banned all types of utilization of asbestos Directive 1999/77/EC and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products Directive 2003/18/EC

For environmental samples one must normally resort to electron microscopy for positive identification. [1] However today gravimetric and PCM/PLM techniques are employed, which cannot readily identify the smallest, most hazardous, fibers. These techniques being limited to PM10 particulate size evaluation which completely ignores UFPs.

Asbestos became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century because of its resistance to heat, electrical and chemical damage, sound absorption and tensile strength. When asbestos is used for its resistance to fire or heat, the fibers are often mixed with cement or woven into fabric or mats. Asbestos was used in some products for its heat resistance, and in the past was used on electric oven and hotplate wiring for its electrical insulation at elevated temperature, and in buildings for its flame-retardant and insulating properties, tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to chemicals.

Why is asbestos dangerous?

Asbestos fibres are present in the environment so people are exposed to very low levels of fibres. However, a key factor in the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease is the total number of fibres breathed in. Working on or near damaged asbestos-containing materials or breathing in high levels of asbestos fibres, which may be many hundreds of times that of environmental levels could increase your chances of getting an asbestos-related disease.

When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases which are responsible for around 4000 deaths a year. There are four main diseases caused by asbestos: mesothelioma (which is always fatal), lung cancer (almost always fatal), asbestosis (not always fatal, but it can be very debilitating) and diffuse pleural thickening (not fatal).

Remember, these diseases will not affect you immediately but later on in life, so there is a need for you to protect yourself now to prevent you contracting an asbestos-related disease in the future. It is also important to remember that people who smoke and are also exposed to asbestos fibres are at a much greater risk of developing lung cancer.

The most common way for asbestos fibers to enter the body is through breathing. In fact, asbestos containing material is not generally considered to be harmful unless it is releasing dust or fibers into the air where they can be inhaled or ingested. Many of the fibers will become trapped in the mucous membranes of the nose and throat where they can then be removed, but some may pass deep into the lungs, or, if swallowed, into the digestive tract. Once they are trapped in the body, the fibers can cause health problems.
