INDEPENDENCE FEVER - Papua New Guinea celebrates 30th anniversary

A sense of pride and the joy of celebration is what you’ll see here as Papua New Guinea goes about preparing to celebrate its Independence. In two days time, 16th September 2005, Papua New Guinea will celebrate its 30th anniversary.

There is already an Independence fever in Port Moresby. The country’s pride and National Symbol - the red, gold and black is a common sight in town and the Bird of Paradise is now flying high in many homes or office buildings with miniature flags attached on vehicles.

Schools and the working class have this time to celebrate with their parents and co-workers before joining the nation in one big celebration on September 16th. Some workers turned up to work in their traditional dresses, painted faces and headdresses while others in their red, gold and black T-Shirts and almost all ladies in their PNG wear - Meri Blouses.

Children coming to understand what Independence is all about...

The banners bearing the 30th anniversary logo hangs from electric poles along the main roads around the city and Public transport, company vehicles and private cars bear the stickers of the 30th anniversary logo. All of these bring about a sense of belonging to any Papua New Guinea seeing these.
And those that take time out to bring about this feeling of pride are those are truly proud to be Papua New Guineans.

The Independence theme for this year’s anniversary was written dwon in three main languages – English, Pidgin English and Motu. The theme, “Putting PNG First” is an appeal to every Papua New Guineans to have a sense of pride for their country.
