The Sir John Guise Stadium was filled to capacity last Friday, the Independence Day, as thousands flocked to watch the events and celebrate the country’s 30th anniversary.

The crowd turned up as early as 8:00 in the morning and by 10:00 am there was no literally no space left to stand and watch the events.

Those who turned up later ended up walking around the packed stadium trying to look for an ideal spot where they could stand or sit and watch all the activities happening in the main arena.

For those who could not help it, they climb up trees, fences and power poles to get a good look at the performers. Some sat or stood on top of big pick up trucks or at the back of small utes to catch a glimpse of what was happening in the main arena.

There were so many people that it could be that half of the city turned up for the Independence celebration.

This boy perfectly balanced himself upon a stump of a cut-out tree and watched the activities happening within the main arena.

So much was going on during the day. The activities include the common cultural dances and singsing – all from different parts of Papua New Guinea, drama or acts, flag-raising with gun parade and many more.

New Ireland guys getting ready to entertain the crowd during the Indpendent celebrations
