Talasea Airport - West New Britain Province

For all Walindi bound divers or tourists and people of Papua New Guinea - Great News ! - Talasea airstip is nearing completion.

One of my fellow work colleagues travelled over to Kimbe last week and stayed at Walindi. He came back with the following photographs and short story on the present conditions that exist in this area of Papua New Guinea:

Update on the Kimbe area as at 9th October, 2002 :

I arrived in Bialla via Lae on an Airlink flight. The drive time to Kimbe from Bialla is approximately 3 hours over both gravel and sealed road.

Whilst the trip is long and sometimes bumpy there is some magnificent scenery along the way including spectacular mountains and rivers as well as the oil palm plantations.

Photograph of Airlink plane on the tarmac at the Bialla airstrip, which is approximately three hours by road from Kimbe township :

The Mt Pago volcano appears calm and from the air the only visible sign of activity is some smoke or steam. I did not see any ash at all, and the locals I spoke with commented that there has been little activity for sometime.

The new Talasea airstrip is currently being re-surfaced and a new terminal building is nearing completion. It is anticipated that the first Air Niugini Dash 8 flight will land at the new airport on Saturday 12th October 2002. No Doubt Airlink will also provide a service into the new strip. Further details should be obtained from either airline as to their schedules etc.

Update: Refer following page, for a copy of a message received from the Managing Director of Airlink. They assured us they will be the 'first' to land on the new Talasea Airstrip.

The trip from the Talasea airstrip to Kimbe is about the same distance as from the old Hoskins airstrip to Kimbe - about 30 or 40 minutes. The road from Talasea winds along the coast with spectacular views over the islands. The first half of the trip is unsealed road whilst the remainder is sealed and is probably one of the best roads I have been on in PNG.

There is a mission station along the road which sits atop a large hill and affords a magnificent view over the islands and Kimbe Bay.
