Institute of Business Studies – 5th Graduation

Last Friday (April, 2nd, 2004) saw yet another successful graduation ceremony in the country. The Institute of Business Studies held its 5th annual graduation with more than 200 students graduating with certificates in Accounting and computing, Diploma in Business and Associate Degree in Business.

The highest number of students (261) graduated with certificates in Accounting and Computing, while 30 students graduated with the Diploma in Business and 11 with Associate Degree in Business as per link program that IBS has with the Southern Cross University of Australia. Altogether there were 301 students graduating.

The institution also proudly witnessed its first graduates of the Deakin University in Australia following its commencement of the Deakin MBA programme in March 2003.

Four students , Himavant Dayanada Mallya, Ivan Pomaleu, Julian Bede Counsel and Michael Trevor Nunulrea completed the four units of the MBA programme which consisted of 12 and were conferred the first year award of Graduate Certificate in Management.

Over 300 people including, parents, friends, relatives and guests at arrived at 2.30 pm at the IBS Campus located at Magila Street, Six Mile to attend the graduation ceremony. His Excellency, Michael Potts, the Australian High Commissioner to PNG, President of the Certified Public Accounts of PNG Michael Kolta were the key speakers.

Director of IBS, Mick Nades during his address to the parents, the invited guests and the graduates said year 2003 was a challenging year for the institution with drop to 657 in the student enrollments. However, despite these challenges the institution has achieved positive results.

“The year 2003 continued to be another year for our Institute with a drop in student enrollments to 657 due to the continuing economic depression,” he said.

Mr. Nades added that although the economic indicator, GDP growth. Improved to a positive 1.5 percent after 3 years of negative growth, the effect of this was never felt I the enrolment of students.

He said this year (2004) the enrolment for the first semester went down further. “Nevertheless, the year 2003 was another year of achievement for IBS,” he said.

Mr Nades has outlined some of the academic achievements for the year 2003. He said the institute has conducted Diploma in Information Technology in order to prepare students for the examination in Information Technology of the Australian Computer Society.

The examinations is conducted in five countries and two students from IBS ranked 1st and 2nd in the Java Programming with one student ranking 2nd in Data Management System internationally last year.

“We very proud of these achievements done by our students,” Mr. Nades said.

He further announced that eight students received certificates from the Australian Computer Society for completing the first set of examination in Information Technology.

“One of the students, the very first, graduated with Bachelor of Accounting at Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour Campus.

The institution is also successfully involved in outward teambuilding which it conducts in partnership with SP Brewery. Six batches of employees, numbering nearly one hundred employees of SP Brewery underwent IBS Training Program.

Mr. Nades a number of companies have registered in following this program, starting this month with Brian Bell.

The Institute of Business Studies (IBS) which traces its origins to 1989 is a product if the entrepreneurial vision of its founder Mick Nades & Associates, an accounting firm set up in 1986.

The enrolment at IBS for the current year is around 700 and ranges from school leavers to working adults representing almost every province.
