Over 50 canoes from pool A, B and C took part in the race. The event commenced on Friday morning with B and C grades lined up for the race. Ela Beach was swarmed with spectators on Friday and Saturday.

The C Grades were the first to set sail on Friday morning followed by the B Grades. The A Grades set sail on Saturday for Manubada.

It was a fun-filled weekend for those who witnessed the event. Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare took time on Saturday to watch the event.

Among the participants were brothers from Gabagaba along the Motuan coast, they are Tau, Victor and Sao Gabi (the former Attorney General).

The brothers owned two canoes namely, Digubada (B grade) and Lebulebu which took part in the A grade race on Saturday.

According to Tau, the event was a success in that it unites all the coastal people together and that it involves all youth in the villages.

“Traditionally, canoe race was a sport to the people of Central province living along the coast. Through this event and other events like Sail –a-thorn and Hiri Moale canoe race which is still to come, it is hope that this tradition is kept alive,” Mr Gabi said.

“Another advantage of this is to get our youths involved and focus their minds on such sports. Most crews in the canoe race before were elderly people. Today we involve our young people and that is a good thing,” he said.

This year would be the second year for the Gabi brothers to take part in the canoe race. They joined up the race last year and came 6th together with Sir Michael’s canoe.

The new A Grade champion for the canoe race was Vavine Gerea from Kaparoko and Auna Fonza was the jubilant winner of B grade with a cash prize of K1000.

The race was bigger this year with more participants registering compared to the previous years. It is hoped to be bigger and better next year.
