Pom Rugby Union Match Weekend Result

It was the Southern Highlands combination of Joseph Omai, Johnson Kuike, Samuel Nap and veteran John Kapi Nato that destroyed the hope of 2003 minor premiers Harlequins in the main game of the Port Moresby Rugby Union competition played on Saturday.

The Wanderers ran in two converted tries in the second half to Harlequins one winning 14-5 in front of a very vocal crowd.

The Wanderers backs trio of Omai, Kuike and Nap used their rugby league experience and solid defence gain from league club matches and turned that on Harlequins to shut them out. And when replacement centre John Kapi Nato was brought into the second half, he made a telling break to set up flanker Leith Issac to score the team’s first try which ignited the team to run riot.

Wanderers now appear to be the threat in this year’s competition although it is early to predict because University win over Marlins 28-12 sees them undefeated after round 3. In the other premier match, Defence had to work hard to beat CDS Royals 12-3.

In the main game, as expected both Wanderers and Harlequins played very fiercely with the first and the only casualty Harlequins prop Anthony Pangkatana had to be escorted out of the field after hurting his ribs in the game. Although he returned from the dressing room he did not last and had to go back and serve the entire second half on the bench.

The Harlequins were first to score at the 22nd minute after a good piece of ball work which saw winger Heni Miva diving over next to the upright, but the conversion failed and Harlies held the lead 5-Nil to half time.

The game seasawed for the best 15 minutes of the game in the second half before replacement centre John Kapi Nato ignited the Wanderers with his break and setting up Leith Issac to score under the post.

And when inside centre Johnson Kuike scored under the Harlequins post at the 75th minute after a good free flow rugby. It was all over for the Harlequins and the worst nightmare when they could not overcome Wanderers late charge to victory.

The Harlequins forwards of Richard Pangkatana, Ben Kote, Tony Pangkatana, Ian Liveras, Cecil Davani, Willie Petalie, Carl Hoot and Joey Chan tried hard but had no answers to the Wanderers raid in the second half. Petalie, Davani and Kote made some good forward breaks through the Wanderers defence but their backs did not complete the moves resulting in a lot of missed try opportunities go bagging.

For Wanderers, every forwards put their hands up and did not let their team mates down. Players like Sefton Vuli, Pene Geita, Scot Morata, Jason Gegeyo, Leith Issac, Joe Koel, Jonathan Kassman and replacement forwards Api Kassman and Terence Kedea had huge game for the Wanderers.

While Harlequins lone back Navu Maha at first five was the only player that really stood out from his fellow backs. Maha’s clever foot work and hard running gave headaches to the Wanderers backs but his other colleagues did not read his game well with try opportunities wasted. Although Harlequins scrum half Julius Taunao and centre Billy Rapilla tried to assist Navu, it was not enough to penetrate the solid defence from Wanderers. Wanderers first five Lawerence Acanufa, wingers David Eri and James Beangke had a top game against their opponents.
