Lae gets a New Resident.

Hi Everyone,

I am moving into Lae from India in another 10 days time.

Initially, I would be moving in and later my family (Wife and 4 months old Son) would be joining me, on completion of their (Wife and Son) Visa formalities.

I would request someone there to throw light on the following :

1. What are the formalities to get Visa for dependants?

2. How long does it take to get Visa for dependants?

3. Is it raining in Lae now (I read elsewhere in this site that it is raining Cats and Dogs in POM)?.

4. What is the rainy season in Lae?

5. Can I have an immunization schedule for infants in Lae so that I can plan my Son's immunization schedule? (He is already on an immunization schedule in India. I just hope there is no need to make an adjustment.).

6. Do i need to get any shots before I depart the Indian Shores?.

7. As an Indian, what specific items I need to carry with me which is not available in Lae. (An Indian would be the best person to answer this question.) I hear that Rice Grinders and Pressure Cookers are not available in Lae and hence I need to carry them with me. Am I correct?.

I know, the list is long so far. But any fruitful information or leads to information would be deeply appreciated.

Warm Regards,
PNG Newbie

Hi PNG Newbie,

1 - 2: I'm not too sure....

3: I live in POM but from what I heard, Lae has much more rainfall than POM... it's unusual for POM to be raining cats and dogs like last week...

Lae is green because of the rain... whereas POM is mostly brown because we don't have much rain here

4. Normally rainy season is around november - april ? maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong here

5. I think you just go to the doctor and they'll do it for you... not sure if there's any "official" schedule...

6. Don't get shot... people can die...

7. I'm almost sure they sell pressure cooker in lae.... as for rice grinders.. what are these?

Thanks Muppie, for your answers...

Coming to this Rice Grinder thing... well... i am a non-starter as for as cooking is concerned... but still... let me see, if i can put in words, what i eat...

In South India, there are delicacies like Idli and Dosa... Idli is nothing but steamed Rice Cake... i.e... Rice ground nicely like a paste and then steamed...

And the raw material for Dosa is the same as Idli, but the final product looks different... The "Rice Paste" is poured onto a Tawa and allowed to cook... (Muppie... I give up... Cooking is Greek-n-Latin for me... Why don't you visit to my home, after my Wife joins me... You can have South Indian Delicacies...)

Ah... before I forget... Rice Grinder helps in turning rice-soaked-in-water into a paste...

Is there any one who knows what a Rice Grinder is and can express it better?...

Love,
PNG Newbie

I'm sure you can find a rice grinder at any electrical shops in PNG....and Lae of course.

When in Lae, check out Brian Bell. When you buy an electric blender, the rice grinder accessories comes with in. My mum has a blender that can grind rice too into paste.
